Nominated for a Best Community Webby, EdNet is an online community micro-site tool housing over 50 different teacher supported communties with over 35,000 members across the entire umbrella site.

NGS staff have the ability to create new fully editable and customized communites at any time. A special events tool allows for the creation of educational event-based mirco-sites such as Earth Day, Hurricane Katrina, Tsunamis and special web cams across the world.

NGS educational initiatives such as BioBlitz, a joint project between NGS and the National Park Serice (NPS), uses EdNet to both provide information to its participants as well as manage a robust registration process for teachers, scientists and students each Spring.

A central directory lists all public communities within EdNet. Teachers can register for as many communities as they need. Each community micro-site can be set as open, private or be time-based and archived once the participants no longer need it.

Each community micro-site features an about us area, resource library, project showcase area, thread forum, workgroup area, and a personalized space "My EdNet" that allows one to save and work with material across all the communties to which they belong.

Community coordinators can turn each area on or off at any time providing a fully customized environment based on one's needs.
